The
Saint Patrick's
Day Parade
Of all
the St. Patrick's Day Parades that are hosted in
thousands of cities around the world probably none are
bigger than the one's in New York, Boston, and Chicago.
In 1848, several New York Irish aid societies decided to
unite their parades to form one St. Patrick's Day
Parade. Today, New York proudly boasts their St.
Paddy's parade as the world 's oldest civilian parade
and the arguably the largest in the United States.
The parade takes more than five hours to move all the
participants through the parade route and nearly three
million people line the streets to cheer the procession.
Boston, Chicago, Philadelphia, and Savannah also have
very popular parades for their community and often each
include over 10,000 participants. An alphabetical
